BIRMINGHAM -- Alabama Citizens for Constitutional Reform (ACCR) will hold its annual statewide meeting on October 26, 2004 at Samford University in Birmingham, ACCR Event coordinator Sandra Behel announced today.

The event, ACCR's 4 th annual meeting, will feature Congressman Artur Davis, Dr. Harvey Jackson, and Representative Jeff McLaughlin.

"As Alabamians continue to call for significant reforms for our state government, the issue of constitutional reform is again gaining attention across our state," said Behel.

ACCR will launch an aggressive campaign, "We the People: A Petition for Constitutional Reform," at the October 26 th gathering. Earlier this year, ACCR's Huntsville Chapter launched a summer petition drive to call for a citizens' convention to present a new constitution to the voters of Alabama. On the day of municipal elections in Huntsville , the group obtained over 8,500 signatures of registered voters.

"The overwhelming response to ACCR's first petition effort was a powerful reminder that the voters of Alabama are hungry for real reform," said Cathy Golden, Chair of the petition drive. "We will launch a yearlong campaign to gather 50,000 signatures to present to our elected officials so that they understand how serious the people of Alabama are about reforming our outdated constitution."
